The education and health services supersector is made up of two parts: the educational services sector (sector 61), and the health care and social assistance sector (sector 62). Only privately-owned establishments are included in this discussion; publicly-owned establishments that provide education or health services are included in government.
The educational services sector comprises establishments that provide instruction and training in a wide variety of subjects. This instruction and training is provided by specialized establishments, such as schools, colleges, universities, and training centers.
The health care and social assistance sector comprises establishments providing health care and social assistance for individuals. The industries in this sector are arranged on a continuum starting with those establishments providing medical care exclusively, continuing with those providing health care and social assistance, and finally finishing with those providing only social assistance.
Data from the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages program show that, in the economy as a whole:
education and health services accounts for about 1.5 percent of all employment and about 0.9 percent of all establishments;
health care and social assistance is about 10.4 percent of all employment and about 7.9 percent of all establishments;
Current Employment Statistics estimates of educational and health services employment for the 1994 - 2003 period show annual average employment growing from 12,807,000 at the beginning of the period to 16,577,000 in 2003 - an all-time high.
Average annual employment of nonsupervisory workers in educational and health services was 11,338,000 in 1994; in 2003 employment of nonsupervisory workers in educational and health services averaged 14,523,000 an all-time high.
The annual average of the average weekly hours of nonsupervisory workers in educational and health services was 32.3 in 2003. The average weekly hours of production and nonsupervisory workers in private industry was 33.7 in 2003.
In educational and health services, the average hourly earnings of nonsupervisory workers was $15.64 in 2003, slightly above the average of $15.35 for production and nonsupervisory workers in all private industry.
According to the Current Population Survey, the unemployment rate of persons most recently employed in educational and health services was 3.6 percent in 2003. The overall unemployment rate was 6.0 percent that year.
Data from the Mass Layoff Statistics program show that in 2002:
in educational services, there were 19 extended mass layoff events, resulting in 2,162 separations of workers from their jobs, and 2,251 initial claimants for unemployment insurance;
in health care and social assistance, there were 222 extended mass layoff events, 30,148 separations, and 25,812 initial claimants.
Employment Projections data indicate that employment in education and health services will increase 31.8 percent over the 2002-12 period, the strongest projected employment growth of any industry sector. Total employment for all industry sectors is projected to grow 14.8 percent.
Productivity and Costs data are not published for any industries in education and health services.
The Producer Price Index program publishes data for many health services industries.
In 2003, there were 143 fatal occupational injuries in education and health services and 737,100 nonfatal injuries and illnesses, according to data from the Injuries, Illnesses, and Fatalities program. The nonfatal injuries and illnesses incidence rate was 6.0 per 100 full-time workers in education and health services and 5.0 per 100 full-time workers in all private industry.
